In the summer of 2015 my Hubby and I took our first backpacking trip together. Our destination was Pictured Rocks – located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. When looking for our hiking destination we considered going out of state. I felt the urge to explore our own state before going somewhere else. I am so glad we chose to visit Picture Rocks. The glorious terrain we experience showed the wonders of our Creator. It was absolutely breath taking. It was so exciting to see that we have such wondrous views in our own home state of Michigan.
We did a 3 day and 2 night hike. We drove to Munising Falls and arrived at about 1:00 AM. Instead of spending money on a hotel, we slept in our car until about 7:00am. We then visited the park office and purchased our permits.
Before we ever set off on our adventure I spend hours studying the National Lakeshore backpacking website. It takes time to plan a hiking trip. I did not want to go out into the wilderness with out being prepared and knowing the rules.
Pictured Rocks does have a lot of rules. Dogs are not allowed, there is no camping outside of the designated campsites, fires are not permitted outside of designated fire pits and chopping firewood is also not allowed.
We got a shuttle ride to the Chapel Trail head. We then hiked 4.4miles to Mosquito Falls and camped there. Mosquito Falls was my favorite view. It was gorgeous and we had dinner and breakfast on the cliffs overlooking Lake Superior. The camp ground was a little hard to find. There was no fire pit, but July weather made it warm at night.
The next day we hiked 7miles to the Cliffs camp ground. We passed Miners Castle/Beach which had a spectacular view. The Cliffs campground had a fire pit but not water access, so we had to fill up before getting there. The trail to the camping site was really muddy in July. I can’t imagine what it would be like in the Spring.
On our last day we hiked the rest of the way to our car, 6.5miles. We made a little extra trip to look at a waterfall at Sand Point. I was surprised at the amount of Waterfalls on this hike.
We were definitely ready to get cleaned up and have some warm food by the time we reached our car.
We only did half of the trail. Next time I would love to do the whole thing.
